Trail and technical shoes are built around grip and protection, and it shows — mostly in the sole and the outer layer of the upper. Both are readable from photographs.
What to look at
- Outsole pattern. Deep, spaced lugs rather than a flat tread. The pattern tells you what surface the design was aimed at.
- Toe protection. A distinct bumper or reinforced toe area.
- Upper layering. Overlays positioned where abrasion happens, rather than where they look good.
- Collars and gussets. Higher collars, and tongue constructions that close the gap against debris.
Where to find them here
Salomon, Norda, On, Keen and The North Face carry most of this group.
