Platform and wedge shoes raise the whole foot, not just the heel. That distinguishes them from a chunky sole, which adds volume without necessarily adding height under the toe.
Telling them apart
- Platform. The sole is thick under both heel and forefoot, and the height is roughly even from front to back.
- Wedge. The sole rises continuously from toe to heel — no visible break where a separate heel would sit.
- Chunky but flat. Thick-looking, but the foot sits low. This is the case that gets mislabelled most often.
Reading height from a photo
Height is hard to judge without a reference. The reliable cue is the relationship between sole and upper, plus any visible seam where the two meet. If the set includes a straight-on side view, use that — angled shots exaggerate or flatten height depending on where the camera sits.
Where to find them here
Platform silhouettes appear across the designer lines — Balenciaga, Rick Owens, Gucci — and in the womenswear groups including Alexander McQueen.
